The relative isolation of our area, varying terrain and increasing recreational activities of the public, require the preparation for virtually any type of emergency. To meet this challenge, Grand Junction fire fighters are trained in performing rope, confined space, trench and water rescues.

    Rope Rescue:

The surrounding terrain and certain kinds of structures in our service area provide some demanding and difficult rescues that require the use of ropes.

    Water Rescue:

Fire fighters are trained and equipped to perform water rescues by boat and other specialized gear. Water-related rescue events are complicated due to swift currents, cold water (even in summer), and poor visibility due to the murky and often muddy condition of the water.

Confined Space Rescue and Trench Rescue:

Fire fighters are also trained to rescue people trapped in spaces that meet the following criteria

    * Large enough to work in

    * Entry or exit is restricted

    * Space is not designed for continuious human occupation

This includes manholes, tunnels, wells, cellars, tanks, sewers and trenches such as underground utilities for water, telephone, electrical, natural gas and sewer lines.
