23 and G Road Roundabout  - Construction completed and open to traffic - May 14, 2012

M.A. Concrete of Grand Junction was awarded the construction contract for $722,761.  The City of Grand Junction will be using a Federal Hazard Elimination Grant for $828,000 to construct the new intersection. The grant will cover 90 percent of the cost of reconstruction, and was awarded because of the high incidence of injury accidents and three fatalities since 2004.

Roundabouts have proven to be much safer intersections than traffic signals or stop signs. When accidents do occur, they tend to be at very low speeds and result in fewer injuries. There have been no fatalities at any of the 11 roundabouts installed in the City since 1998.

According to Lee Cooper, Project Engineer, the new roundabout has been designed to handle trucks up to a WB67, which is the largest semi-truck allowed on City streets without a permit.
