The Grand Junction Police Department Traffic Unit is committed to improving the quality of life through traffic safety by means of public education and traffic enforcement efforts.

The Traffic Unit provides public traffic safety information offered through the City of Grand Junction Municipal Court as well as through various community, civic, and business groups. The Traffic Unit also participates in public awareness campaigns through public media venues as well as in cooperation with the Colorado Department of Transportation.

While the Traffic Unit enforces all traffic laws, it puts a special emphasis on violations that cause motor vehicle accidents, violations in and around school zones and citizen complaint areas. The goal of the Traffic Unit is to reduce traffic collisions, injuries and fatalities by focusing on the factors that cause them. Some of the driving behaviors and factors that directly contribute to these are speeding or careless driving, driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, aggressive driving or inattentive driving.

The Traffic Unit is also responsible for technical investigation and accident reconstruction of collisions involving serious bodily injury or death.

The Grand Junction Police Department Traffic Unit proudly maintains traffic safety partnerships with the Colorado State Patrol and Mesa County Sheriff's Office.

Why do we enforce parking in the downtown area

Downtown parking is enforced to encourage traffic movement so there is adequate parking for everyone.
Long term-short term parking is available for shoppers and those folks who work downtown.

The parking enforcement officer does not know when parking meters expire. The officer only sees the flashing red on the meter to indicate the meter has expired. The meter may have been expired for 10 minutes or 2 minutes.

Fifteen minute loading zones in the downtown area

are busy in the afternoons; People loading/unloading or running into a store to pick up an item. Loading zones are monitored due to cars parking longer than 15-30 minutes too long.

Handicap parking spots are not to be used to load and unload when there is no other parking available. Handicap parking spots are only for handicap –disabled individuals with disabled license plates and /or display a handicap placard on the dashboard of their vehicles.
